The Islay whisky undergoes peating and is aged in six distinct casks. Meanwhile, Laphroaig Select Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is aged in five distinct casks, namely Oloroso sherry, white American oak, Pedro Ximenez, quarter-sized, and first-fill bourbon casks. Once matured, the whisky is subjected to a final maturation stage in virgin American oak casks, a wood type that is seldom utilized in the Scotch whisky industry. These casks are placed in the warmest, highest reaches of Laphroaig's warehouse to heighten the exposure of the whisky to the wood.
