Its history dates back to 1824, when Alexander Reid, a school teacher and barley farmer, founded The Macallan Distillery shortly after the Scottish Excise Act had legalized whisky distillation. The brand has established a reputation for producing top-quality single malt Scotch whiskies and was one of the first Scotch brands to recognize the marketing potential, taste, and significant influence in the production of premium whiskies. As a result, Macallan has gained ownership of as much as one-third of the global single malt Scotch market. Its superior whiskies are the product of traditional distillation techniques blended with an innovative specialization in cask selection. Macallan is the sole Scotch distillery with a Master of Wood, whose role involves sourcing and curating the brand's inventory of over 200,000 oak barrels, obtained from trees grown in the United States and Spain.
