Collection: Bruichladdich
Celebrated for producing some of Scotland's finest spirits, Bruichladdich hails from the famous whisky producing island of Islay. Their distillery uses tall, narrow-necked stills to create an elegant, floral and fruity house style, and they offer a diverse range of cask-finished whiskies, many of which are non-traditional for whisky aging, such as those aged in former Cognac, Jurançon, and Pinot Gris casks. In addition to their three peated single malts (Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte, and Octomore), they also produce The Botanist gin. All of their spirit is matured and bottled on the island, using only Scottish-produced barley, and they maintain Victorian-era equipment, including the only open-topped mash tun on Islay and the last remaining belt-driven mill in Scotland.
Founded in 1881, Bruichladdich's first notable owner was William Harvey, who took over the distillery shortly after it was built and owned it until his passing in the 1930s. During this time, the spirit was primarily used for blending. Ownership of the distillery changed hands multiple times over the next 60 years, with notable owners including whisky brokers Ross and Coulter in the 1950s and AB Grant in the 1960s. In 2000, the distillery was purchased by Murray McDavid for £6.5m, and it was transformed under the leadership of Mark Reynier and master distiller Jim McEwan. Their unique and innovative bottlings and packaging gained worldwide recognition, and the company was purchased by Rémy Cointreau in 2012 for £58m on the condition that they continue with the same approach.
Today, Bruichladdich's recent innovations have resulted in a range of silky peated malts with notes of oak, making it a versatile whisky that can be enjoyed anytime by fans of rich malted drams. This is definitely a distillery worth adding to your spirit collection.
